Q: Update to 10.11.3 made my computer VERY slow.

Title says it.
I've seen that this is a problem for a number of people, and I'm wondering if somebody could take a look at my etrecheck report, and tell me if there's something I can do. My computer was running fine before this. Also, just because I see that it's a common answer, I don't have any apps installed that claim to clean my system, or boost my performance, or anything like that.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you so much.

Launch Console.app from Applications > Utilities and review the logs for repeating loops of errors.  There'll be a lot of arcane messages there (many of which are entirely normal!), and you're looking for blocks of messages that are rapidly repeating.    Something that might be crashing and restarting, for instance.  Post one or two example blocks of each of any repeats here — after reviewing the blocks for any sensitive data — and post maybe 100 lines here at most.  (Please don't grab a big block of fifty copies of the same repeating text message blocks, and post it all here.  One or two copies of each is enough.)

Also launch Activity Monitor.app from Applications > Utilities, and see what applications are consuming resources there.   Based on the Etrecheck logs, it doesn't look like there's a single process consuming lots of CPU, but that check can sometimes miss CPU or disk or network activity that Activity Monitor.app can show.

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

              View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

This procedure will delete certain temporary and cache files. The files are automatically generated and don't contain any of your data. Occasionally they can become corrupt and cause problems such as yours.

Please back up all data and read this whole message before doing anything.

Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

    /var/folders/zz

Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select

              Services Open

from the contextual menu.* A folder named "zz" should open. Inside it are several subfolders, each with long name beginning in "zyx". One of them has this name:

              zyxvpxvq6csfxvn_n0000000000000

Note that the name ends in a series of zeros. Leave that one alone, and move all the other subfolders of "zz" to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

The protections on the applications appear to be incorrect here.  (Has System Integrity Protection (SIP) been disabled?)

You can try to repair the disk volume via disk utility, though that might not resolve this, due to changes in 10.11 El Capitan.

There's an alternative approach available from the command line, which should work.

I was experiencing an issue with my Mac Pro where it would hang on boot with the progress bar at 50%.  The only way to work around this was to re-commence the boot process by pressing & holding the power button, whereupon it would boot successfully.  I presume the second time through it was doing some sort of safe-boot.

The issue was fixed for me after I did the above deleting of temporary files, and also ran the command in Step 1 recommended by Linc in another post.
