What is the real story about error 53?

MacBook Air, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

Error 53 is a hardware failure associated with the Touch ID. It comes up every time if you have an unauthorized 3rd party replace the screen and/or home button. As your warranty is now void and Apple won't even do an out-of-warranty repair, your only option is to take it back to whoever worked on it and keep your fingers crossed.
