Can I merge multiple old backups that are on a portable hard drive into just one backup on the same hard drive?

Can I merge multiple old backups that are on a portable hard drive into just one backup with all the files but no duplicates on the same hard drive?

All those files, taken together, are your Backup.

Time machine will delete exactly the no-longer-needed portions when space becomes tight.

As Duane says, do not change those files "by hand" because Time Machine has them organized in a big database, and if some are removed, you can lose the entire backup.

You should not store other files on a Time Machine drive.

Vacant space on your backup drive is of no incremental value.
