Q: bootcamp not shown in windows 7 installation

I'm attempting to install Windows 7 on my iMac late 2009.

Bootcamp icon shows up on desktop and in terminal "diskutil". The new Windows 7 CD shows on the desktop as a cd image. And the Windows Support files have been downloaded to the thumb drive that is still in the UBS slot.

When installing Windows 7, at the step of where to install it choices, bootcamp is not there. It shows a bunch of other "Disk 0 Partition (various numbers), but no bootcamp.

At this stage I'm trying to find bootcamp and format it to NTFS, so that Windows 7 can be installed.

That's as far as I get. Thanks for any help.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

The only partition that is preserved in a merge operation is the first disk.  All other partitions are erased and subsumed in the first partition specified in the command. If you want disk0s3 preserved, specify it first.

I will take a Xanax and try that.

Things are now worse. I cannot get Bootcamp Assistant to partition the drive. All it does is load Windows Support. The only button to push is "Quit". There is no Bootcamp icon in the drive list.

If I manage to erase, unmount, and throw in the trash HD and one called Untitled that kept showing up and they disappear, whenever I restart, they appear again.

I must have booted up Windows 10 times. There is never a Bootcamp selection for me to install Windows onto. It appeared once briefly and when I selected it to install Windows on, it disappeared and never came back.

You still have HD and HD2. BCA will not let you do anything with this partition scheme. Since you want to preserve disk0s3 (HD 2), please run

    diskutil mergePartitions jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" disk0s3 disk0s2

Post back any error messages and the output.

Merging partitions encountered error "Couldn't unmount disk (-69888)".

    The erase will not occur.

All partitions in the following range must be unmountable:  After, but not

including, the first partition; up to, and including, the last partition.

When I ran the first command as you posted: 0s3 before 0s2, I got this:

The given partitions are not ordered sequentially on disk

Do you have a Time Machine backup setup for HD 2? If yes, then

    1. Backup OSX and all your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

    2. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

    3. Click on Utilties -> Disk Utility and Erase your internal whole disk.

    4. Restore OSX and your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

This requires a separate external disk which can accommodate TM backup - Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .
