I'm looking to get an Imac but would like some advice on processor choice

Title says it all really.

Whats the difference performance wise behind:

3.2GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz

4.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.2GHz

Thank-you

iMac with Retina 5K display, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

The most notable difference is the i7 has hyper threading and the i5 does not. Hyper threading still relies on having software that was programmed to make use of it. Not all applications will use hyper threading so even though it's supported by the processor it may not be used. There is a marginal improvement over the i7 without hyper-threading. The real choice depends on what you plan to do with the computer. If you plan to do a lot of sound and video editing then the i7 might be worth it otherwise the i5 should suffice.
