I have downloaded OS X but it says it will not install to Macintosh HD.

So I have a Macbook Air, and have just downloaded the latest OS X El Capitan. But when I go to install it says, 'OS X will not install on Macintosh HD' .

Why is this the case? What do I need to do to make it install? Please somebody help!

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Does this apply to you? Installer reports "OS X could not be installed on your computer" or "This disk cannot be used to start up your computer"…
