Install Windows 7 and earlier on your Mac using Boot Camp - Apple Support
your iMac support either 64 or 32 bit Win 7. As described in the article different version of the Apple Windows support software is required for 32 and 64 bit.
I would go with 64 bit.
You should always purchase a genuine Win 7 install software.

Feb 6, 2016 3:27 AM in response to lllaassby avriles,Thanks I actually have an iMac and a MacPro. My Mac Pro is running El capitan so thought it would be best to use that unit. I presume I must partition the amount I want to use on the Windows side as I guess this cannot be changed once done.

Feb 6, 2016 5:02 AM in response to avrilesby Loner T,I will recommend the MacPro over the iMac for Windows. On a MP, if you have available disk slots, a full disk can be dedicated to Windows and is much easier than managing partitions on a boot disk. W7 and previous versions do not handle disks larger than 2TB very well, but W8.1/W10 can.
