Cannot ssh to VM linux from macbook terminal

When I try to ssh from the terminal to a VM running on macbook I get the below response.

MacBook-Pro:.ssh root# ssh -p 2222 root@127.0.0.1 -v

That's a problem on the VM, not in OS X.
