Facetime doesn't recognize new Apple ID and Password

I recently changed my email address and updated my Apple ID to reflect that. Now Facetime doesn't work, i.e. after typing in my new user id and pw nothing happens and I'm not able to access Facetime Preferences to change this manually (it's dimmed under the Facetime menu). I've reset the password on my Apple account and that did not help either. Any suggestions?
