Q: Is apple.windlap.net associate with Apple and trouble with Chrome

I have had trouble using Google Chrome. Today after installing Chrome, a Web Site appeared with the URL of apple.windlap.net with the heading os Apple Support. Is apple.windlap.net associated with Apple?

Also, I get warnings that I need to call a number to have my computer checked. I don,t call and I don't use Chrome. Is there a way I can use Chrome safely?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

If the pop-up reloads, force quit Chrome (command - option/alt - esc) and reopen with the shift key held down. If that doesn't work, disconnect from the Internet, go to History and delete the website. Quit and reopen with the shift key held down.

I'm having this same problem -- for a few weeks, although I'be been out of town and this is my first chance to research it.  It's not just this linked site.  No matter what site I go to, after a few clicks, this pops up with a voice over that says "warning, warning, call us immediately because you have a bad virus, blah blah blah"  Then it creates a regime of click through alerts that make it almost impossible to get the laptop to be functionable because they pop up no matter what you try to do.  Seems to only affect online work.

Any ideas?  It's driving me nuts.

You've very likely installed adware or some other dreck on your Mac, unfortunately.   Freebies, cracked apps, stuff downloaded from anywhere other than the Mac App Store or from the developer's web site — consolidators, download aggregators and the rest are best avoided — can contain dreck now.  (And it's sometimes possible to get dreck from the Mac App Store or from the developer's site.)

Apple has a support note on this topic.

First, ensure that Time Machine or some other backup is running before you try any changes and any removals.   Have complete backups.  Always.

Then given this only seems to hit online activity, start by disabling or removing any browser extensions that you have, and disable all of your login items except for applications from Apple or that you centrally need.
