imessage not showing my devices, can't re-add them

I had my iphone setup so that my ipad could send/receive text messages sent to my iphone.

My ipad had a fatal accident (cat+gravity=shattered screen). When I replaced my ipad I went back in to imessage

on my iphone to add the new device. There are no devices visible (it used to say something like "you can send and receive from these devices").

I've enabled imessage on my new ipad and signed in. No messages go to the ipad.
I disabled imessage on my devices, then re-enabled it, starting with the iphone, as one article in this forum suggested,

still no success.

At this point, I can SEND from my ipad, but I still don't receive messages on it. Any suggestions would be

greatly appreciated since I use my iphone/ipad for job-related functions. Since Im a very big man with large

hands (the tip of my finger covers 3 letters on the iphone), I like the keyboard on the ipad much better.
