Q: Why does my apple tv keep saying to turn on home sharing on my computer when it is already on?

I can play all of my purchased movies and apps etc just fine on my appletv. My problem is when I go to play a  movie from my itunes library it will not let me, telling me to make sure home sharing is on. It's turned on, on my computer, my appletv etc. I have restarted it, I have restored it, and I have reset it and it's a constant headache. No matter what I've done I can't get my itunes library to show up.

    I've just started having the same problem too -- I've reset and restored my Apple TV, it's software is up to date and it IS connected to the WiFi network that my Mac is using, logged in with the same Apple User ID acct. I've also just updated my iTunes in case that was the problem and it still hasn't solved it.

    My Mac is running El Capitan v10.11.3 and my Apple TV is running 6.2.1

    Please advise -- I'm losing my mind

    Just to make sure, you do know you have to have iTunes launched and running for Home Sharing to work.

    I do know that -- so, yes, with iTunes open and logged into Home Sharing, the Apple TV is Not picking-up/registering my Mac (like it has for the last 3 yrs).

    I had this happen to me recently when I just bought a new computer with Windows 10.  My computer would go back to log in screen when not used and I fixed it where it would not do that.  I went into power setting and changed my c drive to never sleep. My monitor goes to screen saver and then shuts down after 10 minutes of computer not being used.  Since then...which has been a month now...Apple TV has not given me that message.  I'm thinking when it went to log in screen it cut off communicating to my Apple TV.  Can't remember if telling my drive to never sleep fixed it where computer would not log me out....I could have changed a setting to fix that automatic log out too.

    Possible bug in update 9.1.1. Updated to TVOS 9.1.1 and when the ATV 4 goes to sleep or I put it to sleep it will disconnect from Home Sharing via Mac Mini (Yosemite 10.10.5). Only after rebooting the ATV 4 it will reconnect to Home Sharing. Reconnected my ATV3 and it picks up Home Sharing even after a couple of days sleep.

    Hi, I am having the same issue.

    Litterally tried everything.

    Important note is that in the beginning it did work, and after I do some of the below, it typically works for a few hours, only to then out of the blue say I need to turn on Home sharing again.

    I did;

    - Change my computers name,

    - Change the entwork name,

    - Change the Wifi name

    - Unplug every device,  (repeat all of the above) then plug them back in

    The only thing I can imagine is that somewhere down the line the Apple TV can no longer find my Imac (that is home sharing) because it loses track of it (I am no computer guy, (not a complete idiot either), but that is the only viable solution I have.

    To clarify a bit further;

    - My internet connection comes to a router.

    - the Apple TV is wirelessly connected to this router

    - a Time capsule is connected to my router (ethernet) and my Imac is connected to this Time Capsule (Ethernet and Wifi) (Yes I tried just using Wifi and/or Just ethernet to see if this made a difference).

    - I have another Apple TV in my bedroom that is connected via Wifi to my Time Capsule and that has never had any issues with Home Sharing.

    So my guess is that somewhere between the Router that my Apple TV is connected to, and the Imac that is connected to the Timecapsule, the signal gets screwed up, or goes missing and the Aplle TV can no longer find the Mac.

    Again, I typically get it to work, but after a couple of hours the Bug will return and the ATV will ask again to put on Home Sharing. If anybody has any firther tips. I will be a very grateful person.

    Well....you're solutions gave me a little bit of hope.  I didn't see your post until I had got home with a replacement ATV3 (thinking that It would solve the issue --- I Didn't )  I then re-named my computer, de-authorized and authorized it, tweeked around with the 'Sharing' settings and nothing's helped. I thought the issue was with the ATV because my computer and my phone wouldn't 'register' it for me to 'display' things on....

    Can anyone give me some advice (applicable) to solve this?  Cuz I'm about 12hrs away from calling Ms Cleo

    I just started having problems just like this. Home sharing on but Apple TV (version 4) says Home sharing not on. I wonder if it is the two step iTunes verification process. I would like to back to the old way.

    I still have to reboot my ATV4 after it’s been in sleep mode even for a few hours to get it to connect back to Home sharing. And the Ethernet port still does not work after I exchanged it and upgraded to 9.2. Come on Apple, worked well out of the box under 9.0 - it 'just worked'.

    I have had a similar problem but all I had to do was turn off the Apple Sharing on my Apple TV and then turn it back on.  It was stuck, sort of, and by turning the setting deliberately OFF and then back ON, it reset and everything is fine.  So, go to the Settings and turn OFF Apple Sharing, wait a beat, and then turn it back on and it might work.

    I have the same problem. It worked two weeks ago. Now ATV keeps telling me to start 'home sharing' on my up to date Mavericks iMac using the same login. I've tried that. I've tried two logins, the same one on all my devices. They're on the same wi-fi circuit. I've rebooted ATV, restarted the mac, done everything. Also, my son's Macbook Pro can't see any access to Apple TV either. And nor can two iPhones in the house. My APT software is up to date – I checked. Sounds like Apple's trying it's best to get us all to buy the latest Apple TV system. Pah.

    Turning my Apple TV home sharing off and on worked for me. That was after turning the home sharing on the Mac off and on.
