Choosing Print & Scan crashes System Preferences

Further, choosing "Print" from any application gives me the spinning beach ball and I'm forced to Force Quit. I've tried Safe Boot, booting to a different account—no luck. On the one occasion (I don't know how it happened and can't duplicate it) that System Prefs gave me a dialog box with Print & Scan, there were no printers listed and I couldn't find any when I tried searching for "Printer." (I'm on my laptop and no physical printers are connected. If I want to print I connect via WiFi with my Mac Mini and use the Samsung attached to that, but I do that only rarely. I prefer to just transfer the file to the Mac Mini and then just print from there. But that should have nothing to do with this.)

Maybe that is the issue—that there are no printers listed—but I don't know how to get out of this situation. I've tried repairing permissions, etc., etc. and now I can only think of booting from my Recovery HD but that is my absolute last resort . . . any ideas?

Is your laptop able to access the internet and other resources? Is your laptop able to access the Mac Mini? Is your Mac Mini also connected to the network wirelessly? Basically, is your network working, and are there any differences between how the (non-working) laptop is configured and the (the-printer-is-working) Mac Mini?

Please post the output of Etrecheck, which will display information on the software and hardware configuration, and some other details.

Yes, my laptop is on the Internet via Wifi.

I'm sorry I mentioned the Mac Mini because this really has nothing to do with it—when I'm using my laptop the only time I want to print anything really is to a PDF, and for that I don't need any physical printer.

But in this case, Safari, TextEdit and any other program for which I can Print hangs with the beach ball. So this is not really a Mac Mini or even Wifi problem—it's local.

Here is my Etrecheck report. Please note that I have been using the same items (Utilities like Backtrack, PopClip and TypeIt4Me for years with no problems).

Get backups going via Time Machine or some other means. Do this first. Like right now. Before making any other changes here.

Then... Remove MacKeeper. Remove Trusteer. I'd likely also remove Tinkertools. Use the vendor-provided instructions for removing these packages.

Standard you-have-a-torrent-client-installed caveat: If you've downloaded any applications from a torrent, remove those applications, too. Particularly if you've downloaded any cracked applications, start watching your banking and financial data, and you'll probably want to change all your mail server and other passwords. Yes, there are legitimate uses of torrents. But unfortunately, some of the "free stuff" that's available is designed to acquire and upload and resell your information and data and access.

If you're going to run Oracle Java, Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight, get a plugin blocker.

My references to the Mac Mini were intended to determine if that too had issues, which would imply a problem with the network or the printer, and not a problem localized to the MacBook Pro.
