iTunes sync with iPhone is not a true sync

Apple Support states, "Syncing means adding items on your computer to a device." This is not true syncing - it is replacement. True syncing would sync the latest time stamped item when encountering the same named item, regardless of whether it was on the iPhone or computer. Playlists are not synced, but are replaced by whatever happens to be in iTunes on the computer. If you created an original playlist on your iPhone, iTunes will copy it the first time it's synced, but if you make changes on your iPhone, iTunes will override them with your first synced copy of that playlist. Syncing will copy new songs that you have acquired on your iPhone to the iTunes library, but that's it. It ignores what I suspect is the primary point of updating information, which is the iPhone, not the computer. Apple's attempt at redefining 'syncing' is very sad.

Apple does not respond at all to myriad complaints about this on its forums and blogs. Apple needs to take a serious look at this lack of true syncing. If you have added songs to your Music playlists and have automatic syncing turned on, be prepared to have to re-enter your choices in your playlist and then sync one more time. Thanks, Apple, for completely ignoring this issue for the last 10 years.
