Is the ipad pro pencil battery widget updated continuously?

I keep losing my pencil for the iPad pro because there is no clip or means of attaching it to the keyboard cover. I am hoping that the battery widget showing a value for the pencil means that it is nearby (within Bluetooth range). Does anyone know if it updates in real time or if this is an historical reading?
