Mac Connecting to Linksys WRT54G

I have an strange issue that I need to bounce off some people. I recently sen up a wireless network for my father at his house using a Linksys WRT54G and a DSL modem. I set up his new network fine. His PC connects fine via Ethernet. My freind's Mac Book connects fine. My Mac Book Pro is having a hard time. As a little background, at my home I have the same router and it works fine. I have connected everywhere else with no problem.

I am having two problems and they must be related. First, my Mac sees my fathers network, but when I try to connect I get an error trying to connect. If I select "other" and put in his network name and WEP128-bit encryption key, it connects fine. Then when I select any internet application, it times out. I checked the network preferences and it does not appear that I am getting an IP address (it is set to DHCP and works everywhere else that I connect to). If I manually change the IP address and router setting it connects to the Internet and all is fine. As soon as the Mac Book Pro wakes up from sleep (or reboots) I have to reenter the encryption key (and it gets tedious). My Mac works everywhere else, my dad's router seems to be working, but the two don't work well together (tho I can force it to work).

Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

If your router is running firmware version 1.01.0 (the latest version) there is a problem with the DHCP server in the firmware that affects some Macs (and some other machines , but not Windows PCs. The solution is to go back to version 1.00.9 of the firmware. You'll find a lot of info and the location of the older firmware here:

My Linksys router has been a pain since I bought it.

I used an older linksys B router for over 4 years with sterling service. When I got my MacBook I bought a 'G' router to take advantage of the faster airport card.

Soon after set up the router would drop my MacBook off. My wife's G4 iBook was having the same problems. Once I unplugged the router it was fine and would work for a few hours or a few days. Once the drop off became too annoying I called Linksys and was told to upgrade the firmware. (my router was a V5 BTW) Once I upgraded then the router would not hand off an IP address to any of my Macs and I called Linksys again.

They agreed to change out the router. They sent me a new one (this one is a V6 with the older firmware 1.00.9) After about 2 days of use the router started the familiar dropping off. I don't dare try to flash the firmware. There is no rhyme or reason to it and sometimes it will work all day with nary a problem.

For 60 bucks I think I am going to buy a Dlink

William,
You might wait just a bit. The new firmware (1.01.0) that doesn't work well with Macs because of a DHCP issue, was supposed to improve the dropped connection issue. I was told Linksys engineers are coming out soon with a firmware revision that should address the DHCP problem and, presumably, it will contain the connectivity fix as well. They did not give me a date for the new firmware release, but indicated it would be quite soon.

Add me to the list. The new firmware seems to be working fine on my machine. I find the following statement from Linksys to be slightly amusing...

From the release notes for 1.01.1...

Firmware 1.01.1
- Resolves issue with IP address assignment via DHCP on some particular devices.

"some particular devices"? Why couldn't they just come out and say Macs running OS X? Why can't Linksys get a spine and officially support OS X? How hard or expensive would it be for them to include an OS X wizard on their setup disc? It appears from other posts that they will work with Macs users if they call tech support.
