Brand new iPad: not enough room to install updates

I got a brand new iPad, 32 gb, and when I tried to install the software update I get the message that there's no room. I don't have any app or music or pics in it. How can that be possible? Also, it takes FOREVER to charge. WHat can I do? I hope there's a way to download those updates and use it. Thanks!
