Apple store has special "Apple Certified Refurbished" sales.

That is clearly marked as "Refurbished".

These Apple products are not sold as new.

An 'authorized Apple reseller' who is an independent business run separate from Apple, Inc

may chose to accept and resell previously owned computers in their store; these may be

under any rules that suit their business.

So you may find places of various stability or reputation re-selling used or repaired computers

but be very sure they are not associated with any previous owner or any AppleID and do not

have any former owner accounts because you will not be able to easily update or upgrade to

a later system or access your own App Store to buy applications for any old owner ID, if there.

Check to see if there are evidences of prior ownership before you buy a 'used' or 'open box'

item from a reseller who may offer those. Official Apple Stores don't offer 'used' products.

There are some independents I'm aware of that have new-old-stock or offer 'open box' that

were either 'demo' models in their retail store set out for customers to handle, or ones that

were returned by customers for whatever reason. Independent resellers do not have the

same return policies that official Apple Store locations or official online Apple Store does.

Official Special Deals refurbished items at Apple Store have same warranties and

the option to purchase AppleCare extended plans just as the new products do. But

they have been sent to a refurbishing process and are guaranteed like new, too.
