I have changed password in gmail on my Mac Pro (Retina, 15", late 2013) with OS X EL CAPITAN Version 10.11.3 and Safari Version 9.0.3 and subsequently Mail stopped working.
Have tried several suggestions, latest yesterday from pedro d, but can't manage it.

Have you tried deleting your Gmail account from the system altogether in the System Preferences -> Internet Accounts, and logging back in?
