How do I get my macbook to recognize my iPhone?

I am trying to connect my iPhone to iTunes on my macbook. I can connect my shuffle and it works just fine. My phone will only charge, other than that, my computer does not recognize it.

iPhone 6, iOS 9.2.1, mackbook os x yosemite 10.10.5
