USB audiointerface drains power even though it is not USB powered

rMBP 2015 + Focusrite Sapphire 6i6

The audiointerface is not USB powered i.e. it uses a small discrete PSU.

However, it still increases powerdraw more than I would have expected, even when the interface is plugged in but not active (i.e. playing sound on internal speakers with audiointerface connected and turned on)

With the device disconnected, I get 7-8 hours of Office use + itunes streaming, with the device connected, I get less than half of that.

Is this normal?
