The 3rd Generation Shuffle seems to be incompatible with the newer Apple Headphones. Any workarounds for this?

My old apple headphones got frayed and I bought a new pair of Apple Headphones but the controls on the headphones don't seem to work with the iPod shuffle (3rd Generation).

Anyone else have this issue and have a workaround?

As an alternative (to finding older Apple headphones with compatible buttons), you can get an "adapter" with the playback control buttons. For example

There are several similar products, but this one specifically says "Fully compatible with iPod shuffle (3rd generation)" in the product description. With such an adapter, you can connect any standard headphones, including those EarPods.
