Mac keeps freezing

I am having trouble with my mac.

It is not one of the newer, lighter ones, its quite heavy.

Although there are issues with the disk entry I managed to get an external one however if I am working on something and

have maybe 5 tabs open its freezing up.

When I say freezing , I don't see no wheel and I can move the mouse cursor but I cannot interact with the mac via the mouse or keyboard.

I have absolutely no idea what could be wrong.

Only time it doesn't crash is if you are browsing the internet which is kinda no good to me.

Any help would be appreciated.

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.1)

Hi, mike I've have been using Eset & LittleSnitch, and I experienced a lot of crashes too.

Will try your solution and post back, but just to tell you my friend. I've been in the security field and can post a really good list of almost all 0-days that still work on un-upgraded Mac's that are really vulnerable, where Apple tightens security really good is IOS and you see we have a Jailbreak, and those pieces of exceptional code are based on exploits. So still buggy my friend. Nothing is not prone to threats.

The report is quite long,

At the top it says system performance is good but there are 2 things in red.

Unknown Files found is one and then Time machine is in red. Other than that everything else is in green or blue.

The unknown file may be spyware judging by the name however it is flying under the radar of my spyware remover.

do I need to bring it to get it repaired?

When you see the freezing behavior, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.

Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.

Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

If you have an account on Pastebin, please don't select Private from the Paste Exposure menu on the page, because then no one but you will be able to see it.

You need to post the report so we can take a look. If you have security concerns just follow the advice of the other poster. He's asked you to post basically the same information but in a different format. One way or the other you need to post some information before we're able to offer sound advice.

Your biggest problem is that you're running AV software. Uninstall the eSet software per the developers instructions, restart and test. You don't need it and it's hurting performance.

You could easily upgrade your ram as 4Gb is a little low for El Capitan but by not having a lot of applications running at once you may be able to get away with it. Since you don't have Time Machine backups set up hopefully you have another back up strategy or one day you could be back here asking how you can recover your files from a crashed drive.

Feb 7, 2016 10:22 AM in response to SeaPapp

Wait! You don't need an Anti-Virus on a Mac? I assumed you would

I saw something popping up for "Mackeeper" but I was told that was a virus or at least damaging to the system?

I'm not a Mac expert or anything but do you mind if I ask why Mac differs to windows with regard needing anti virus software?

I will set up Time Machine backups as soon as possible.

Thank You!

Feb 7, 2016 10:59 AM in response to DipDab

OS X is superior to Windows in protecting itself. That said at this time there are NO active viruses for OS X. There are other kinds of malware and adware but AV software isn't going to do anything about them. AV software on a Mac serves one purpose other than to slow your machine to a crawl, it alerts you to windows viruses that cannot run on your Mac that you might pass on to windows users. Uninstall eset, and don't install anything that claims to protect, clean up, speed up, tune up, optimize or otherwise take care of your Mac for you. OS X is better at all of those things by itself, keep it up to date and use safe common sense computing and you'll be fine.

Feb 7, 2016 11:11 AM in response to DipDab

Hopefully you marked the thread solved because you've got you iMac running better now. One other thing I'd like to share is Activity Monitor, since you only have 4Gb of ram you'll want to use your Mac with Activity Monitor open for awhile and pay attention to the Memory Pressure graph. If you need more ram it'll be obvious in AM Use Activity Monitor on your Mac - Apple Support

Feb 7, 2016 1:58 PM in response to DipDab

16Gb is the maximum amount your iMac can use. To get the biggest bang for your buck, and I think it would serve you well, I recommend that you add 2x4 for a total of 12Gb. I ran my 2009 iMac for a few years with 12Gb and it was great. If you're going to upgrade get your ram only from a quality vendor such as

OWC http://eshop.macsales.com/ or Crucial http://www.crucial.com/ While another vendor might be a few dollars cheaper (and maybe not) their ram isn't exact spec ram that Macs require.

If you can operate a screwdriver you can upgrade your ram, here's a step by step guide https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iMac+Intel+27-Inch+EMC+2309+and+2374+RAM+Replacemen t/1630
