Apple mail, set for manual, still checks automatically

I am using Apple mail on my Mac Book Pro.I have it set to manual check but it still checks automatically. I have an iPhone and an iPad, that are also set to manual. How can I make the MacBook stop checking automatically? I have updated all to the latest updates.
