Feb 11, 2016 12:45 PM in response to Lawrence Finchby xcesv4c,You are wrong. They can still get an out of warranty swap even with previous work done to the device. I have even exchanged one with missing shields. I cannot provide a list because they are spread throughout the entire country. We do have a few local ones here in Ohio and there are many in New York as well such as Rossman Repair Group, iPad Rehab, and L2 Computers. If course you wouldn'tknoe of these wonderful alternatives though because apparently its wrong for anyone to service Apple devices instead of Apple. There is nothing wrong with repairing your own device and yes, at your own risk. Its no ones choice but the consumers however it is still a choicr so why not offer it. What may be right for one person may not be for you or someone else. I don't understand why you would offer help if you dont even provide all the possibilities.

Feb 11, 2016 1:50 PM in response to Ossalv16by zenmanic,"If my phone were abducted by aliens, the most I would lose would be anything put on it today." Great you backup, but many others don't not because the information is not valuable, but because life gets in the way of doing things.
"Where should i get my Studebaker repaired?" Where is the outrage that this is not on topic.
"Body shops are ... crooked" Great in your experience body shops may have been crooked but to blanket the whole industry is a disservice to the industry.
Now to get back on topic.
"Fine, provide a list of those reliable third party repair companies, along with the proof that the are competent."
Really. You can't find a reliable company. I'm sorry for your loss. Almost all industries rely on trust. Trust that they are a professional. Trust they won't lie to you. For any savvy consumer you have to investigate who you do business with.
Yelp is one of the many great services that a savvy consumer can use to judge a business.
For those that don't back up data.
"(Who ever doesn't backup data) really doesn't care about protecting their data."
Really? That's just insulting. It's simply a fact that people don't backup their data. Belittling their baby photos and wedding pics is just insulting. Not every one is tech savvy and often times assume incorrectly or just simply believe nothing bad will happen.
Third party Standards or certifications.
"The independent smartphone repair industry has no such standards and no certification processes" Truly how much did you research into the industry before you made that statement. Did you even bother to research the information you are providing.

Feb 11, 2016 2:07 PM in response to Philly_Phanby xcesv4c,If it were my fault, I'd simply buy them a new one. Its really not that big of a deal if you know how to take care of your customers. I will say though that in my 3 years of doing about 50 iPhone repairs per week, not a single one has been rejected by Apple that has needed an OOW swap after I touched it.
It really is simple. Apple will do the swap.

Feb 11, 2016 2:15 PM in response to zenmanicby deggie,Yelp is not a good source to make a good judgement about anything.
If the "community" does have such a thing how about posting links here and educating people? Because I've never found such a thing and I've looked.

Feb 11, 2016 2:23 PM in response to deggieby xcesv4c,If Yelp is not a good source to make judgement then these forums are absolutely pointless as well. At least people can get input on which businesses have a good and bad rep and then go to the higher rated ones to get service or advice. Here in the forums all anyone says is "Go to Apple for this..." "Go to Apple for that.." How do you call that advice? Do you think they haven't already thought of that? There are other alternatives than going to the manufacture for every microscopic detail and if they want to ask questions or learn about these alternatives they should have that right. Half the time all Apple does is suggest a swap instead of fixing the problem which is exactly why people do NOT go straight to Apple. Lets do some common sense thinking here...

Feb 11, 2016 2:22 PM in response to deggieby zenmanic,LOL yelp is one source there are many. But i really laugh when people complain about yelp. Do you care to tell us why yelp is so bad?

That's the good thing about going to Apple.

Feb 11, 2016 2:27 PM in response to zenmanicby Philly_Phan,As I stated previously, in an Apple environment you really have to work hard to prevent the valuable data from being automatically backed up.
-
Feb 11, 2016 2:27 PM in response to Philly_Phanby xcesv4c,Why? So you can give them money for a new device when the old one is still able to be fixed? Apple is one of the worst companies, if not the worst company in the world when it comes to being environmentally friendly with electronics.. Almost everything people take to them to get "swapped" can be fixed for a cheaper cost by a 3rd party company AND they can still keep their data.
-
Feb 11, 2016 2:30 PM in response to Philly_Phanby zenmanic,You obviously don't work on the front lines of phone repair. Its simply a fact many people don't backup their data. The why and how is irrelevant. It still happens all the time.

Feb 11, 2016 2:30 PM in response to Philly_Phanby xcesv4c,Good for you that you have yours set up, but there are still thousands and thousands of iPhone users that don't have their data automatically backed up.. yes maybe part of it is their fault, and some might not even know any better but regardless there are people out there that need data that are unable to access it and Apple will do NOTHING to help them.
