Why are song titles greyed out?

This question is asked several times in the forum but none of the apply to my situation. I have downloaded a lot of songs from itunes and they show up in playlists as greyed out. In the case of one album, a song won't play after one after the other. Each has to be selected separately. There also isn't as much information like track number, and no check boxes.

In other cases the songs play normally on shuffle.

Maybe a related problem but when I synch the phone a lot of songs are still greyed out with the cloud download symbol. Why aren't these copied to the phone?

(I have come to hate itunes. It is BUG-GY, and these are just more examples.)
