setting iPhoto to use photos on supplemental HDD

Using: iMac 2.5GHz 4/500GB

Running out of space on Mac's HDD (60GB left).

connected Drive 4TB external HDD, moved photos and music to Drive (approx 200GB), when I open Photos app, all my photos appear.

When I open iPhoto, none of my photos appear.

How do I get iPhoto to find/use my external HDD as source for my photos?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), 2.5GHz Intel Core i5 4GB 1333 MHz

I thought I did. When I checked what was on the remote HDD, the Photos Library had 160GB of media, the iPhoto Library had 7MB. I tried restarting iPhoto with Option key down, looked for way to switch libraries to the Photos Library, was not successful. How do I tell iPhoto and Photos to look at the same collection of media (on the remote HDD)? I'm not the most technically adroit user, so detail is appreciated.

Thanks
