When I try to install Yosemite in the Utilities, I don't have enough hard drive space. How can I access my hard drive?

It takes me straight to the utilities screen that gives me the option to try to verify/repair the drive (it checks out ok), download Yosemite, get online help or to try Time Machine backup
Have you run Repair Disk or just Verify?
You should be able to boot into Safe Mode and clear out some space. Are you pressing the shift key as soon as you hear the start up chime?
