In the original days of iTunes, anything that you bought and didn't want could simply be deleted. Once iTunes started making all past purchases visible in the cloud, a couple of problems occurred:
- Stuff you had long since lost interest in kept showing up.
- Stuff you didn't want others to see became visible (e.g. on Family Sharing).
For both these reasons, iTunes added the ability to hide selected past purchases. It is of course optional to do so.
