Wont charge despite orange light

Hi,

My macbook does not charge despite of the magsafe being connected showing the orange light. When I do SMC reset the light is green only to return into orange when I let go of the keys. The battery shows 24% although this number seem to change from time to time, however if I disconnect the charger the laptop turns off instantly. When clicking on the battery the condition is : replace now, battery is not charging, power source = power adapter. The macbook has been like this since 01 of January, could be a coincidence - but figured its worth mentioning. It seems to me that the battery might be broken, but as I am currently in Central Kalimantan, the closest apple store and official repair centre is about a 2 hour flight away - so it would be great if there are any methods to fix this by myself, this post is written on the macbook - but the situation is quite annoying given that power shortages are not unusual where I am located. Would appreciate any help. So far I have tried the following: cleaning the magsafe connection point, smc reset and pram reset. I have considered reebooting the system but it would take me a good 12-13 hours only to complete the installation and I am worried to do any installs like that due to possible power shortage leading an installation to fail halfway.
