I upgraded to El Capitain and lost all of my address book. How can I get it back?

I upgraded to IOS 10.11.3 and lost my entire contacts list. How do I get it back?

iMac, OS X El Capitan (10.11.3)

If you are using iCloud, you should be able to sign back into iCloud and your Contacts should show up.


If you are not using iCloud, you can restore them from your Time Machine backup.

If you were not using iCloud, you can try to reset the index.

Go to this folder

~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook

You can copy and paste that line into the Go To Folder dialog from the Go menu in Finder.


First, look inside the Metadata folder and see if you the vCard files still exist in that folder.

If they do, delete the three files named adressbook-v22.abcddb (-wal, -shm).

Open Contacts and see if the contacts re-appear in the Contacts app.
