I am trying to import an MP4 movie, select clips, then delete the rest. I cannot do this on import and can't figure out how to delete the rest after. Any ideas?

It is not possible to trim unwanted media from clips in an event. I guess this is in line with the principle of a non-destructive editor - the raw media as imported can't be changed. If you want to use only small pieces from a long video you have to break them out into separate clips before importing into FCP X. This can be done for example using Quicktime Player.
