photostream and backup stopped working

Out of the blue my photostream stopped syncing. Strangely enough, my iphone 5 also stopped backing up to icloud at the same time. Does anyone know if they work independently of each other? For instance, can the phone successfully back up even though the photostream isn't syncing? If so, it's not as much of a worry since I still have the photo's in a backup if needed. My ipod touch backs up fine and always have, but I've had a TON of problems with icloud backup not working since upgrading to 9.0
