OS X El Capitan December Update won't install on my iMac

An automatic OS X software update in December won't install on my 2011 iMac rendering the machine out of use.It starts installing OS X and after a while I get to the install screen with 24 minutes remaining as the message. Then the message appears: "OS X could not be installed on your computer. File system verify or repair failed. Quit the installer to restart your computer and try again".

I have looked at any repairs using Utility and that came up with nothing. I am not sure what to do.

I appreciate any help in resolving this issue!

Which version of Mac OS X are you currently running on your iMac?

What is this December update that you speak of? What is the exact name of the update?

It was Capitan that was running before. One morning I went to work on the computer and I found it installing an update and I am not sure what the number of the update was. I can't check it as the iMac tries to install OS Capitan and fails.

Go to the Apple in the menu bar and click on it. Click on "About this Mac". What version of OS X does it say?
