kernel panic xpcproxy

Hi everyone,

Every now and then my macbook pro (mid 2011, 15inch, 16g RAM from Crucial) suddenly crashes without a warning.

I checked the hardware and everything is working just fine so I guess it must be the software.

I get the following report:

Would be awesome if somebody could help me troubleshoot this kernel panic/crash...!

You could try and isolate the cause, or at least troubleshoot as far as possible

and then at some point, if no forward traction can occur, arrange a visit to an

Apple Store with Genius (they can check the computer) or an Authorized Apple

Service Provider; among these are premium or specialist designations where

available who may also be authorized Apple resellers, independent businesses.

• Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

About kernel panic messages and routines that may help determine their cause

or their scope; and sometimes provide a means to resolve them...

• OS X Yosemite: If your Mac restarts and a message appears

Read through the link above and try what is suggested to see what details are learned.

The first link does show Safe Mode instructions as a means to start + troubleshoot.

Another item to try to see if the effect is software, is to try a different user account:

• How to test an issue in another user account on your Mac - Apple Support

Other suggestions and useful ideas may be found in other linked sources:

• Generic 'Resolving Kernel Panic' instructions + troubleshooting - the XLab:

http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html

• Technical Note TN2063: Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics:

https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/technotes/tn2063/_index.html

Since there are hardware and software causes behind kernel panics, the message

does relate to a place to start. The Technical Note does show details on debugging

or understanding the coded messages; although a bit dated it is a fair resource.

At 1:30 AM on Monday...

Good luck in resolving this matter! 🙂

PS: XPC -- this appears relate to X Code. If you were developing software or using XCode to use software

this may relate to the XPCproxy. Look into the earlier explanation in the Error message, again...

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff802eb6beed): "a freed zone element has been modified in zone MAC Labels: expected 0xffffff8053b39e80 but found 0xffffff8051b39e80, bits changed 0x2000000, at offset 0 of 64 in element 0xffffff8051b39ec0, cookies 0x3f00111253cf4fbe 0x53521b7ac093bf5"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2782.50.1/osfmk/kern/zalloc.c:496

Although you may not have anything using XCode or at a developer level, the previous Developer article

on Understanding and Debugging Kernel Panics should be revealing, even if not resulting in a solution.

The various aspects of XPC and other layers of kernel and device drivers, are detailed below:

• Kernel and Device Drivers Layer - OS X Technology - Overview/System

https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/OSX_Tech nology_Overview/SystemTechnology/SystemT…

Do you have any system modification software, or have you changed the system in terminal or command-line?

Some users may use third party utilities that can change the OS X at the lower level & do damages there.

Thought I'd get back to you on this. Even if it may not help all that much.

And at 2 AM local time, I should be asleep long before now. Oh well...

Good luck & happy computing! 🙂

According to Apple's specifications, your model can use at most 8 GB of memory, but you've installed 16 GB. The results are unpredictable. The manual for the product gives instructions for adding aftermarket memory that read something like this:

You can add two 4 GB memory modules for a maximum of 8 GB of memory.

I know the RAM vendor says that the out-of-spec configuration will work. If you accept that assurance, please ask the vendor for help with any problems you have with it. Otherwise, reinstall the original memory, or new memory that complies with Apple's instructions.

Feb 8, 2016 12:23 PM in response to Linc Davis

Dear Linc and Shaffer,

Thanks for helping me out here..

The problem was exactly caused by using 16g of RAM.

I googled a little bit around and saw that the issues of using 16g RAM in Macbook Pro from Mid 2011 started occurring when upgrading to OS Mavericks (happened to me as well).

Bit annoying now that this issue takes place because I often need a lot of work memory to run big datasets on multiple cores.

Any idea if the problem continues to exist on El Capitan?

Thanks again!

Feb 8, 2016 1:42 PM in response to Ibelins

Some users had issue with the memory chips supplied by reputable sources, but

only when they were not among specific ones tested by the seller in the exact Mac.

So, given Crucial (and others) supply a variety of similar specification RAM chips

I've been skeptical of just buying two 8-GB chips {for use in my i7 quad-core Mini}

when there are at least three different versions of what appears to match specs.

But they don't. This is where the problem can be sourced.

My first impression of a kernel panic where none had existed before, is to trace

the upgrade of RAM to see if anything (console logs, etc) began to show effects

about the time of the upgrade to new different chips. And be sure to keep those

original RAM memory chips, to revert to and test the hardware using them first.

Some companies like buyers of their RAM to 'trade-in' the original RAM chips.

Don't do it. They're inexpensive and are helpful in troubleshooting. And part of

my reply was in an assumption the unit you have could have been running OK

memory upgrade of the exactingly specific tested RAM chips. Otherwise I'd have

suggested to revert to the original ones, and test using less applications running

or use a lesser encumbered second user account. [My bad.] In a second account

you could load up a testing utility or run a heavy load to see if the system holds up.

{I've had a few instances of terrible Kernel Panics that lead to an AASP damaging

logic boards-- a horror story about factory upgrade slot in iMacG4 last model, under

AppleCare without qualified AASP & took 6,000 total driving miles to accommodate.

Bought an iMac direct from Apple, none available in nearest reseller 200+ mi away.}

And thank you to Linc Davis for the correct thinking on the RAM upgrade; it was my

first suspicion. And given the various subtle differences in memory chips that do fit

but MAY work, I've not bought upgrades for my (one year old) Late-2012 Mini i7...

My 2005 G4 Mini (last model -- 1.5GHz PPC) is still considered my main computer.

One of the suggested vendors with 'guaranteed tested' upgrade memory, is:

• MacBook Pro 15" Mid 2012 - View Memory Options - OWC macsales, reference:

http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/1600DDR3S16P/

So the RAM upgrade you purchased should go back to the vendor, and if guaranteed

to work in your model, they are doubly wrong. Read all specs (if available) next time

because they aren't created equal even if their labels suggest it's so.

Good luck in this matter and continuing developments! 🙂
