OSX 10.11.3 unable to insert password when iMac wakes from standby. I need to power off/on to get access. Any thoughts ?

What happens when you try to type in the password after waking your iMac?
Hello Duane, The small dots where you type the password do not correspond with what I'm typing. I thought at first that both the keyboard and mouse had lost contact with the iMac so I checked the power and pairing - okay. It only happens when waking up from standby and the only way back in is to power off and back on. Starting from off it works perfectly. It's almost as though the machine is trying to fill in the password by itself with random characters.
