How do I fix: The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -1407).

I'm trying to clean up our old iMac to give to someone. When I try to send to trash either the package contents of an app or the app icon, I get this error:

The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -1407).

What is causing this and how can I fix it. System is running OS X 10.6.8.

If the Mac is to be given away just delete the entire content and don't set it up with a user account.

It's going to a friend, so I want to keep some things on it, not do a complete erase. I did solve the issue with help from another answer. Thanks for the suggestion.

You can not do that (it is against the times of your license to use)

Erase the machine entirely.
