iMac goes to sleep alright but aways re-awakens in middle of the night (probably in daytime too.) Settings all seem to be correct. Friends say 'Blame the cat' but cat shows no interest in keyboard.

Read this Apple Knowledge base article on Sleep and Wake modes. Pay special attention to the "Power nap" section.
As i said, my settings are all correct. I don't see Power nap in energy saver (2013 27", up to date OS.) It just comes back on in middle of the night, I must be wasting power/wearing out the screen.
Which up to date OS?

Saw a thread here - that since Tiger you do not have to leave your mac powered on for UNIX clean ups to take place -- that was about the only reason to leave it powered on - and was the reason why there were some cleanup software out there. Apparently they now on wakeup - and according to the thread if you shut down you did not need to run them.
I am not dumb, I don't have all those energy saver options. Running El Capitan 10.11.3
I don't usually turn power off.

No one said you were dumb. But if you don't have those options, something is wrong with your El Capitan install.
Reset the SMC, as per > Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) on your Mac - Apple Support
If that does not help, then you may be experiencing power surges or power sags from your local grid.
I think that some of those options are dependent on the hardware capabilities of the Mac. These are the options available on my mid-2007 iMac running OS 10.11.3.

It seems you're correct Duane. The first Macs with Power Nap were the Late 2010 MacBook Airs.
