Incompatible app needs system upgrade

Numbers app needs updated, App Store says its incompatible because software needs upgraded. Next upgrade is El Capitan. Why is the app incompatible and will upgrading help?

What version Numbers do you have?

What OSX version do y have?

I Think I may have figured it out. My mom emailed me with this information this morning, and I didn't have time to remote control at the time to get hands-on knowledge. Turns out the problem was that the software was higher than the upgrade for numbers, so I had to download the older version of Numbers.
