transferring photos to thumbdrive

Is there an easy way to copy an album in Iphoto to a thumbdrive? I don't have room for the entire iPhoto library (right now) and just want to back up one album for now.

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Hi sofromlex,

If your thumb drive is formatted for Mac OS X Extended (Journaled) and is large enough to hold your photos, you can export the photos in your album to it. I would suggest creating a folder on the thumb drive first using the same name as your album. Then, in iPhoto, select the album, select all of the pictures in the album, and choose File > Export [number] Photos.

The two resources below will help you this:

Format drives as Mac OS Extended

You can check the format of a hard disk by selecting it in the Finder and then choosing Get Info from the File menu. The format is displayed in the Format section under General Information.

Formatting a disk using the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format

Important: If you have any files you want to save, be sure to back them up to another drive before you erase the drive they are on. Reformatting a drive will permanently erase all of the data on it.

  1. From the Finder, click the Go menu and choose Utilities.
  2. Open Disk Utility.
  3. Select the disk or partition and click Erase.
  4. Choose a format from the Format pop-up menu. Choose Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
  5. Type a name for the disk.
  6. If you want to prevent the erased files from being recovered, click Security Options, select the option you want, and click OK.
  7. Click Erase.

iPhoto: Export photos, videos, and slideshows

Export photos in a selected format

You can export photos so that you can import and work with them in other apps. You can choose the size and format for the exported photos.

  1. Select the item you want to export.

  2. Choose File > Export > Export [number] Photos.

  3. Click the Photo Kind pop-up menu and choose the file type for the exported photos.

    • JPEG creates small-size files suitable for use with websites and other photo apps.

    • TIFF is a lossless file format that works well for transferring photos between computers and apps.

    • PNG is another lossless file format popular for web images.

  4. Click the File Name pop-up menu and choose how to name the exported files (this step is optional).

You can name your exported files using the titles you’ve given them in Photos, their filenames, or or a filename numbered sequentially. If you choose Sequential, you can specify text to appear before each number (for example, Birthday01, Birthday02, and so on).

  5. Click the Subfolder Format pop-up menu and choose how to divide the exported files into folders.

For example, if you export photos from several different moments, you can have Photos export each moment as a subfolder named after the moment. Choose None to export the photos as individual files without subfolders.

  6. Click Export.

  7. Choose where to save the exported photo files, then click Export Photos.

Take care,
