Sound: output device not showing up

With El Capitan, I only have sound preferences in safe mode, but no output device is shown so I have no sound. In regular mode, it shows no sound preferences dialogue box. Help?

Hello BrianM8614,

I understand that you no longer see the Sound Preference Pane in System Preferences unless you boot your Mac in safe mode. Fortunately resetting your Mac's SMC and NVRAM can help restore your ability to recognize its speakers and produce audio once more.
