Q: El Capitan drops Internet connection

Ever since I upgraded to El Capitan a few weeks ago my 2014 MacBook Pro hasn't been able to stay online. The connection to outside world eventually drops, sometimes in a few minutes, sometimes in an hour. During this I cannot load web pages, connect to any server or ping anything other than my wireless station, while other devices, like my iPad Air are able to use the same station both at 2.4 and 5 gHz. Sometimes the connection may recover by itself, sometimes I manually turn the wi-fi off and back on, which works temporarily. My station is a dual-band Sagemcom F@ST3284 DC, and it is located in the same room with no obstacles in between it and my devices. The connection issue has persisted ever since I installed the device. Connection speed is excellent when it works.

What I've tried so far:

  • Resetting the wireless station
  • Switching it off and back on
  • Switching the computer's wi-fi off and back on
  • Tried both 2.4 and 5 GHz base frequencies
  • Trashing internet preferences
  • Resetting PRam
  • Scanning and checking for overlapping wireless channels
  • Testing the connection with an iPad Air, an iPhone 4S and a cheap wi-fi dongle without issues
  • Adding Google DNS  in Network preferences

    Hello !

As you have posted that you are using air port router using both 2.4 Hz & 5 MHz means it can be air port express 802.11n in a double dose & it gives best speed .suggested article : http://www.apple.com/airport-express/

Please open air port utility via spotlight , click on edit & select internet then click on internet options do the settings as in screen shot .

Then select network click network options

    in wireless options

Make sure , double NAT is not configured , in your ISP modem please set as automatic , keep the firewall as checked .if in case if  NAT is enabled  by setting air port express in bridge mode it will disable double NAT  , as only one NAT should be enabled in devices .Screen Shot 2016-09-05 at 11.07.00 PM.png

Please contact your service provider for internet connectivity , in case if you have manual how to set modem it might help you or sometimes loose connections / damaged wires could be also the reason .

    Best wishes ,

                           Thanks !

I've already contacted them, replaced the base station and done all kinds of configurations. If the wires are damaged, how come they only cause disconnections exactly every 15 minutes without affecting the wi-fi on my iPad or my iPhone?

I had same issue , i am using D link router my service provider never suggested to form password on it , and settings were done manually . i called the person he told me your modem lights are green means internet connection is working fine . the person cross checked the wires that are coming from pole to the modem . AS A SMALL CUT IN WIRES COULD DROP DOWN WIFI CONNECTION .

But that's not a way to set it should be done automatically and firewall option should be always checked .

As i am using air port express , without forming password on my service provider modem, and very important unchecking the firewall i noticed that when opened air port utility DNS server settings were changing .

Some one was pinging on my network on my modem  and some options were unchecked .

Forming password , checked firewall settings , set as automatic and  everything was fine .

i tried to flush DNS cache via terminal command and it didn't worked .

So , basic theme of it is form a  strong password on modem + plus check the box of firewall + please do the settings as automatic .

And do a hard reset for your modem  , take all wires from back side and insert a ball pen on the back side miniature hole for a minute  , also do not use paper clip or sharp needle it can damage the modem .

I don't know the settings inside your modem because every modem has different settings .

    So ,

            Please try this method .

                                                   Thanks !
