Q: Thunderbolt monitor turns off if magsafe cable disconnected

If I have one of my Macbook Pros connected to the Thunderbolt monitor via the thunderbolt cable and the magsafe power cable and I unplug the power cable, the monitor completely disconnects. I've tried this with a Macbook Pro that is running El Capitan as well as a Macbook Pro that is running Yosemite. There are times I would like to disconnect the power from one and charge the other and this is not possible now that this is happening...

Any idea how to fix this? I can't find any way around the problem.

its a feature. you must have power connected to use external display with lid closed.

It seems like this used to work...Is there any way to disable this "feature"? I would like to be able to cycle my battery on occasion but my laptop is in a location where it's not suitable for opening the lid.
