How to keep pictures from Photos on my Mac

Do you mean keep from importing photos into a Photos library?  Import from where and how?

With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution.  We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:

    • what system version are you running?
    • what exactly is the problem, in detail?
    • how much free space on your boot drive?
    • how big is your library, i.e. how many photos?
    • what fixes have you tried?
    • where is your library located?
    • did you apply any updates or upgrades just prior to the problem occurring?
    • are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?

    Pmanreflibrary.png

    • what type of Mac?
    • have you run any "cleaning" or "optimizing" apps on your Mac?

If all your pix are there then what's the problem? Describe in detail what you setup is in Photos so we can understand what you're trying to tell us.

Yay!  Found it, and yes, all my photos are there.  Does this mean that they are actually on my hard drive?  And the photos library looks the same as Photos so can I do similar, i.e. make albums etc that will be on my hard drive.  I have iMac (Retina 4K, 21.5-inch, Late 2015), with 998gb storage.

    Thank you for your help.

Sorry.  Just to be a bit clearer, my understanding is that Photos is on iCloud therefore everything on/in it is in the cloud rather than on my Mac.  Is that right?  If it is correct then I would also like to have the same on my hard drive.  I have this sort of distrust of things floating around on-line and feel more in control if I have them on my own computer.  Know it sounds crazy.

So, my photos are on iCloud Photos, and now I have found Photos Library on my hard drive (I think) with everything in place.  I think.  Can I make albums etc in Photos library?  I am assuming it won't automatically go on to iCloud photos library.

I really wish that Apple still did the one to one sessions locally, but it is discontinued and the workshops aren't usually about what I what to know!

Thank you so much for your time.

Not at all - if you are talking about iCloud Photo Library (there are many iCloud services) then all of your photos are on all devices using ICPL - the originals are always on iCloud.com and on each device you select whether to have the originals or optimized versions

Can I make albums etc in Photos library?  I am assuming it won't automatically go on to iCloud photos library.

Yes - Photos  works exactly the same as always and you can make albums, edit etc - but since all devices are using the same library all changes you make on any device are made on all devices so your albums will be on all devices

Also can you change the names of a whole bunch of photos - what used to be called Batch Change in i`Photo

Depemnds on what you are calling names - there is no field called "name" in Photos (or iPhoto)

If you select a group of photos in Photos and right click and get info you can enter information in the info window and it will be applied to all selected photos (on all devices if you are using ICPL)

The photos will not be in the cloud unless you setup your Photos library to use the iCloud Photo Library. They will be on your hard drive.

If you are using the iCloud Photo library and have the following two selected in Photos/iCloud preference pane

    PprefswithiCPL.jpg

the full sized versions of your  photos will also be in your library.

Post a screenshot of your Photos/iCloud preference pane so we can see how you've setup the library.

As for batch changing the titles that feature is not available in Photos.  However, there are a could of Applescripts in the Photos for Mac User Tips for doing just that.

Application versions of those scripts can be downloaded from this tutorial page: P01 - Applescripts from Photos’ User Tips Compiled as Applications

With these Preferences  all your photos should be in your Photos Library on your Mac as well as in iCloud Photo Linrary.

And it says "Updated just now", so all photos should have finished downloading and syncing.

Are you running the latest version of MAcOS X El Capitan?  Then Photos can change the titles of multiple selected photos.  Select all photos at once, then press the key combination ⌘I (for Get Info) and now you can change the the title, the description, the keywords, the location for all photos at once by typing it into the Info panel.
