Boot from DMG on hard drive

I have an old G5 Powermac that I want to update to 10.6. My optical drive no longer works but I have a DMG of the leopard installer. I have opened the DMG and clicked on install, to which it prompts me to restart in order to install 10.6 but then the mac just restarts back to 10.5. No install takes place.

Why is this?

Would it be possible to put the DMG on and old hard drive using disk utility and then boot from that?

Thanks.

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.5.6)
