free up memory on a MacBook Pro

I'm trying to install an update to my GPS, but its telling me I don't have enough memory, I have a 16GB machine. I have lots of pics and music, but I thought I had uploaded that to iCloud

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), iOS 9.2.1

Are you running out of RAM memory, or are you referring to hard drive disk space?

Is the computer telling you your start up disk is full? Are you getting an error message?

If it is showing your HD storage as full, then your hard drive is either full of files, or your computer isn't accurately viewing the files sizes. This is your hard drive. RAM does not affect the amount of files you can have on your computer.

If it shows a lot of Other, try reindexing Spotlight. In step 4 you want to add Macintosh HD, and then remove it in step 6.
