I have lost all my contacts - why would that happen

When I tried to open my contacts, none were there. However, when I send a new email to a person, that person's email address is available.

Go to your contacts. If you have a groups button in the top left, tap it and make sure everything is checked.

If that doesn't work, go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars. Look at each of your accounts and see if Contacts is turned on. If it is, turn it off then back on to see if it will start syncing your contacts back again.
