Unable to log into the App Store

I have an iMac (10.10.5) and I am unable to log into the App store. I have software updates but I am unable to log in.

Here is the error message given since trying to log in on 2/7/16. What could be the issue?

1. Please sign in to the iTunes Store with the same Apple ID you're trying to use in the App Store. If you can do that, try the App Store again.

2. If you still get the error, select the Purchased tab in the App Store window. You'll be prompted to log in to view your purchases. Try to do that. (Credit for this observation to ASC member emilyfromvville.)
