The screen goes mostly dark and does not respond. I have to do a hard shut down and then it won't reboot until I unplug the thunderbolt connector. Is it possible the projector is too old? Thank you!

what adapter are you using?
I have two, same result with either. One is a Gigaware and the other is a CEFC. Someone in the office gave me the second one because they never used it.
Those are the most likely source of the problem. get an Apple adapter and it will be pricey, but should work fine. ("the Apple way".)
