Since upgrading to El Capitan, every program is slower than before. Battery life is shot.

Question

I have been experiencing everything slow since moving to El Capitan 10.11.1.I have a MBP Early 2008. 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 1TB SSD.Every program runs significantly slower than before the "upgrade". Frequently, when printing from MS Word, the program shows the color wheel indefinitely until I force quit and restart it. It does not matter which browser I use. I have tried Safari, Chrome and Firefox. Launching applications is slow.Everything is slow! Simply finding a WiFi network takes significantly longer.Additionally, the battery life went from several hours to about 45 minutes. The battery was registering fine before the upgrade.None of these symptoms occurred before this "upgrade". I have removed all apps from the login items under system preferences/user prefs.Is there anything I can do to improve this performance? When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.   These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.Launch the Console application in any one of the following ways:☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.The title of the Console window should be All Messages.
